Dong-sup Lee Reelected as Kukkiwon President and Begins His 3-Year Term

Dong-sup Lee (1956) has been reelected as the president of Kukkiwon and will begin is 3-year term.

At the “Kukkiwon Presidential Election Certificate Award Ceremony” held at 11am, October 7 in the main building of Kukkiwon, President Dong-sup Lee received the certificate of election from the Kukkiwon Election Commission and official began his term.

On October 6 (Thu), 994 out of 1,197 voters participated from the electoral college and President Lee won the election by a high percentage of votes, getting a total of 385 votes (40.78%).

Beating his rival candidates Woong-seok Yoon [251 votes (26.59%)] and Soo-min Kim [138 votes (14.62%)], Lee succeeding in getting reelected and has become the new president for the next 3 years.

The voter turnout for this election was 78.86% with 253 abstentions and there were no invalid ballots.

With 9 candidates (1 cancelled registration and 1 resignation) running in the race, this year's election was one of the most competitive in Kukkiwon’s history and for the convenience of voters at home and abroad, the election was carried out online.

For the online voting which was held from 6am to 8pm, voters were sent a URL by email and by phone and they were allowed to vote after authenticating themselves.

Kukkiwon is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. I am determined to reestablish Kukkiwon’s reputation as the World Taekwondo Headquarters and will take initiative in reforming Kukkiwon and Taekwondo. And I would like to welcome every member of Taekwondo family to this journey” said President Dong-sup Lee receiving the certificate of election from the President of the Kukkiwon Election Commission.

“In 2021, President Lee was elected as the president in a by-election and accomplished so much even in his short term. In this new 3-year term, I hope he makes Kukkiwon the center of Taekwondo the members of Taekwondo family can be proud of” said Gap-gil Jeon, President of the Board of Directors of Kukkiwon, congratulating President Lee.

In 2021, President Lee was elected as the president in a by-election held in January. The agendas he pushed during his term last year such as the plan for building a new Kukkiwon, support for expanding international offices and establishing additional branches and offices, are expected to gain momentum with his new election.

Kukkiwon president’s 3-year term begins on October 7, 2022 according to Kukkiwon’s Articles of Association and regulations.
