Kukkiwon is the center of the history and future of Taekwondo

Kukkiwon was founded on November 30, 1972 to inherit, develop, and promote the spirit and skills of Taekwondo, which is the cultural heritage of the Republic of Korea, as well as contribute to human peace. 

The name Kukkiwon is a compound word consisting of "kukki(國技)", which means the original martial art of a nation, and "won(院)", which means house. Thus, as the house that takes the lead in Taekwondo. Kukkiwon is called the World Taekwondo Headquarters.

It is playing a pivotal role for the further consolidation of the base of Taekwondo as a traditional martial art and global sport and its institutionalization as cultural content.
