Kukkiwon Holds Taekwondo Textbook Launch Ceremony

Ceremony Held on July 7 (Thu) 11AM at Hotel Samjung … English Edition to Be Available for Purchase at the End of This Month

Kukkiwon held ‘Taekwondo Textbook Launch Ceremony’.

The ceremony which began at 11am on July 7 (Thu) inside Hotel Samjung’s Adonis Hall was held to commemorate the launch of the revised Korean and English editions of Taekwondo Textbook and to promote the use of the textbook among Taekwondo instructions when teaching the trainees.

Around 200 people including Kukkiwon President Lee Dong-sup, Kukkiwon employees, the co-authors, expert reviewers and advisors who have participated in the compilation of Taekwondo Textbook, Gangnam District Council Member Son Min-ki, Seoul Taekwondo Association President Kang Seok-han, Gyeongsangnam-do Taekwondo Association President Han Gyu-hak and other Taekwondo leaders.

The event was particularly meaningful because around 150 Taekwondo leaders who run Taekwondo dojang and are also the main audience of the book were there.

“I am deeply moved to see the release of the English edition as well as the Korean edition of Taekwondo Textbook. I’ll do my utmost to increase academic value of Taekwondo through various research and to make Taekwondo Textbook widely used in the Taekwondo community” said Kukkiwon President Lee Dong-sup in his commemorative speech.

“I’ll do my utmost to promote and to raise the prestige of Kukkiwon which is the pride of Gangnam District and Seoul. I also hope Taekwondo Textbook gets released in many other languages and promoted across the globe” said Son Min-ki, member of Gangnam District Council.

After the commemorative speeches, Park Jong-beom, Director of Taekwondo Research Institute explained the purpose of releasing Taekwondo Textbook, the publication process and future plans.

Last December, Kukkiwon published a completely revised edition of Taekwondo Textbook for the first time in 16 years. Also, recognizing the need to promote the techniques and philosophy of Taekwondo globally, Kukkiwon started compiling the English edition of the book in February and finished it in around 5 months.

Like the Korean edition, the English edition of the book includes, △Volume 1 Understanding Taekwondo △Volume 2 Basics △Volume 3  Poomsae △Volume 4 Competition and △Volume 5 Breaking and Demonstration.

Kukkiwon compiled Taekwondo terms and examples using English and romanization so that Taekwondo instructions around the world could better understand them and, focused particularly on translating training methods and strategies in Volume 4 (Competition) and Volume 5 (Breaking and Demonstration) into English.

After translating the text, 4 experts reviewed it for any error and to ensure the consistency throughout the text.

Lastly, the ceremony ended with Kukkiwon President Lee Dong-sup and key guests’ cake cutting, photo shoot and a luncheon.

The English edition of Taekwondo Textbook can be purchased via online (YES24, Kyobo Bookstore) and offline stores starting around the end of this month. The complete 5-volume set is KRW 120,000 and an e-book per each volume is KRW 16,800.
